About Sarah Jane
Although from a very artistic family I only came to painting about 6 years ago. My Davy ancestors lived and worked in and around our locality. Many of them were artisans of creative trades including cabinet makers, carpenters and millers at Lew, Sydenham and Splatt Mills. It's no surprise that I feel that I've come home since moving here.
Both my parents were skilled in the arts. My mother was a successful potter with her own studio and my father taught art and produced his own paintings displaying his immense skill in the craft. My brother also took the creative route and is now Director of Typography at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California.
I took the commercial route through my working life but since moving to Devon have picked up the paintbrush. I find inspiration in our landscapes of field, moor and sea. I am enjoying the creative stretch and experimentation that this involves.
My love of colour and texture is what forms the basis of my ideas. By using many mediums including acrylic, wax, pastel, charcoal and ink I try to create the feeling of my idea on the paper and not just the form. I am working towards including some of my poetry into future paintings and attempting more semi-abstract works. I will continue to learn and experiment as I go.
